Nativity Sunday school lesson and activities by age
One Christmas story, four ready-to-teach lesson outlines, so every class in your church can learn the nativity at the right level.
Updated 1 November 2026 · How we pick resources
Bible passages: Luke 1:26–38, Luke 2:1–20, Matthew 1:18–25 and Matthew 2:1–12, with the prophecies in Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6 and Micah 5:2.
Big idea: God kept his promise and sent his Son, Jesus, to be with us and to save us.
Each outline fits a 45–60 minute class. Times are a guide; drop the craft if you're short on time.
Preschool (ages 3–5)
Memory verse: "Today a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." (Luke 2:11)
- Welcome (5 min): Show a box wrapped like a present. "Today we're going to hear about the best present God ever gave."
- Story (10 min): Tell Luke 2:1–20 with simple props: a doll in a blanket, a shoebox manger, a tea-towel for a shepherd's headscarf. Let children hold the props when their character appears.
- Game (10 min): Nativity freeze frame: children strike each character's pose when they hear the name.
- Craft (15 min): A paper-plate manger or a star. See the printable picks below.
- Prayer (5 min): "Thank you, God, for sending baby Jesus."
Check understanding: Where did Mary lay baby Jesus? (In a manger, Luke 2:7.) Who told the shepherds? (Angels.)
Kids (ages 5–11)
Memory verse: Luke 2:11, or Matthew 1:21: "You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
- Opener (5 min): "What's the best promise anyone ever kept for you?"
- Bible story (15 min): Read Luke 1:26–38 and Luke 2:1–20 aloud, or have children read verses in turn. Pause to ask: why were the shepherds afraid? What did the angel say?
- Story in order (10 min): Teams put eight scene cards in order (instructions here).
- Review game (15 min): Play the Kids level of a Christmas Bible game show, or use our free trivia questions.
- Response (5 min): The shepherds told everyone what they'd seen (Luke 2:17). Who could you tell about Jesus this Christmas?
Preteens (ages 11–14): promises kept
Memory verse: Isaiah 9:6: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…"
- Opener (5 min): Show three prophecies on the board: Isaiah 7:14, Micah 5:2 and Isaiah 9:6.
- Prophecy match (15 min): In pairs, students find where each promise comes true in Matthew 1:22–23, Matthew 2:4–6 and Luke 2:11. Discuss: these were written hundreds of years before Jesus was born.
- Discussion (10 min): Why do you think God chose shepherds to hear the news first? Why a manger and not a palace?
- Review game (15 min): The Preteens level of a game show, or the 11–14 questions on our trivia page.
- Take-home (5 min): If God kept these promises, what promise of his do you need to trust this week?
Teens (ages 14–18): God with us
Memory verse: John 1:14: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."
- Opener (10 min): "What the Bible actually says." Ask true or false: the Bible says there were three wise men (it names three gifts, not the number of visitors, Matthew 2:11); the wise men visited the stable (Matthew 2:11 says they came to a house); an innkeeper turned Mary and Joseph away (Luke 2:7 says there was no room, but no innkeeper is mentioned).
- Read and discuss (20 min): John 1:1–14 and Philippians 2:5–8. What does it mean that God "made his dwelling among us"? Why does it matter that Jesus was a real, helpless baby?
- Review game (15 min): The Teens level of a game show, which goes deeper into the prophecies and the meaning of names like Immanuel and Bethlehem.
- Response (5–10 min): Where do you most need to know that God is "with us" right now? Close in prayer.
Ready-made review game for all four classes

For a longer session with kids aged 8 to 12, a Nativity escape room lets teams work through the story from the shepherds' field to the manger.
